Joshua Sparling
Have you seen
this yet? The story about the school-child letter to injured American soldiers that says "DIE" on it? It's sick. But then, this IS what the left and the Democrat leadership in America stand for. This is the type of thing the ACLU supports. It IS disgusting, and it is wrong.
Keep up with Michelle's post, as she's updating with good links and information about how to support the injured troops, unlike the Democrats and the left would have you do. I'm sending my card directly to Joshua Sparling. I'm also going to send some other cards and phone cards for those who are willing to put their lives in danger so I might be free.

Charlotte Incompetence
I know when it comes to government, to even mention the word "incompetent" in the same sentence as government really is redundant. Government, in today's manifestation, is completely incapable of doing what government should do, and totally screws up anything they try and do.
For example, today in Charlotte, NC, the temperature was below freezing. Apparently everyone knew this -- except the morons managing the city of Charlotte.
This is the same city that, two years ago, spent tens of millions of dollars buying brand new snowplows that get used an average of one day a year. So the one day when they're actually needed, where are they? In the garage.
There's a loop around the city ("interstate") that is a series of overpasses. At 7:00am, as rush-hour traffic is massively increasing, this loop was closed. Why? Because the salt truck was salting the bridge.
Apparently this freezing was just a shock to the city management and they just didn't expect it. If they did, they might have done as all the smaller surrounding towns did and SALT THE DAMN ROADS. Why wait until 7am to close the road and salt it? Because the management of the city of Charlotte are complete morons.
Now I'm not the one who complains when a once-a-decade snowfall of 1 foot falls and the city can't clear the roads -- that's a completely different story. This is a very small number of 20-30 yard sections of road that the city cannot figure out are frozen until rush hour traffic starts crashing on them. That's incompetence.
This example of the uselessness of government brought to you by Pam Syfert (city manager) and the letter "U" (for useless).

Ogre, you almost seem shocked by this. IS this not par for the course? That is why I bougtht the vehicle I did, we had snow Friday night and all day Saturday. My street still hasn't been plowed, but now if they run a plow down it it won't do any good because the snow has been compacted into ice.
Yet I'm paying an increased tax to help better prepare for winter weather.

They close the roads to salt them?
Huh, here they salt during rush hour. It's pretty horrible to get stuck behind one, all that salt pelts your car.

True, Contagion, I can't say I'm really surprised. I'm just one of the few willing to point out that they spent so much money for truck that get used about once or twice a year, and they can't even get them out the one time that they're actually needed.
And Machelle, they don't just close the roads, they close the darn interstates so the salt truck can drive back and forth over a small section of bridge...

End of Grade Test?
In the state of North Carolina, all government school students (and those who choose not to participate in the cesspool that is government-run socialization programs) are required to take a standardized test at the end of grades 3, 5, and 8.
The state board of education requires these tests to ensure that only those who pass the tests will be "promoted" to the next grade. There is a great amount of stress in the schools and much pressure placed on "educators" to ensure that students pass these tests.
However, if a student fails one of these tests, there is only a 21% chance that they will actually be held back. In other words, 79% of the students who FAIL the end of grade tests actually repeat a grade. And yes, the students are well aware of this fact.
So why are the tests in place? No one seems to know. The state board chairman Howard Lee (D) said that the board may have to "throw in the towel."
In other words, the state board of education set the rules, the schools are ignoring them, so the board is considering changing the rules. What a total waste of money and resources. Can anyone give me ANY reason that the state should have ANYTHING at all to do with education?
I think a box full of rocks has more intelligence and could do a better job running the state education system.

Here in Florida if you fail those tests you fail that grade. There are problems with the testing but there is also a lot of value in having an objective standard to measure by.

It's another example of having so many rules that you simply get to pick to ignore any that you don't like.
And Mindflame, you're SUPPOSED to fail that grade here, too, it's just that the school districts are terrified of being labeled "underperforming," so they just promote the students who fail anyway.

Free Dome?
It's weird the things you can find in cyberspace. I was reading
a post at Harvey's about Freedom of Speech and what is considered freedom of speech.
That led me to a different post on Alex in Wonderland that was quite a bit more serious in speaking of freedom of speech, and more specifically about suppression of speech by "shouting down" or crushing someone's will for free speech.
Then, reading further into the comments on that post, Contagion piped up about something called the "Free Dome" of speech and mentioned he had posted on it before. I found a neat post of his about Cowboys and Indians, but nothing about this "Free Dome."
So I did what everyone with the internet does -- I googled it, and found it. Unfortunately, the Free Dome project apparently closed their tent and evacuated the circus grounds in Binyamina at the end of June, 2005, according to their press release. But don't worry, they're still fund raising in hopes of re-opening in the future.
I'm not quite sure how you raise funds for something that's free, nor why anyone would want to put a tent in a dome. I guess if you want to know, you should ask Harvey -- he started all this.

The Hebrew script on the logo caught my interest. I'm Jewish. Write something in Hebrew script, I'll pay attention, for a moment.
A free dome, eh? Okay, I'll bite. Turns out, they want to build a dome in Israel so people can dance and perform?
There are plenty of tents in Israel, and plenty of people dancing. There's no reason to give money. None at all. In fact, if you've already given, ask for your money back. The tax refund isn't worth it.

What they really need is to sit down and watch a Michael Flatly video, so they'll realize just how silly dancing really is.
If it's not at a wedding, it isn't necessary. And, it never merits a dome!

Guard Our Borders
Euphoric Reality supports a blogburst each Monday -- the "Guard Our Borders" blogburst. Usually there's a reference, entry, or suggested subject for the blogburst, but I haven't seen one for this week (unless that entry about
the poor cat was it...) So, I guess I'll just find something on my own...
Checking the news wires, the first listings all reference "businesses that need foreign laborers." Excuse me? Need? I guess this is just another person changing the meanings of words to fit their own usage, never mind what the words really mean.
There's no such thing as a business that "needs" illegals. Sure, some might enjoy paying some people less, and criminals might work for less, but that doesn't mean they "need" them. If a business would cease to exist if they stopped "employing" illegals, I say, "Good riddance."
The Asbury Press has an article that suggests America is "hooked on illegal labor." Well, some people are "hooked" on crack cocaine -- does that mean we should make it legal, give them more, and pay them to continue to use it?
I cannot find the bill now, but I know one has been introduced in Congress -- that bill would very quickly solve the illegal employment problem. The bill (please help me if you know the bill or the sponsor) would allow the IRS to effectively enforce immigration laws -- it would make it so that a company could not deduct the earnings paid to illegals.
So if a company employed $50,000 worth of illegals, that deduction for expenses would be disallowed by the IRS -- and the company could not write off that $50K in expenses -- meaning the company would have to pay taxes on that $50K as a profit instead of an expense. It might not stop illegals entirely (it would take stopping GIVING them so much stuff), but it sure would cut down on their employment -- one of the big reasons people come here.

Foreign laborers does not equal "illegals"
Worker A will work for 5 years installing heating/air conditioning for $300/house in the Las Vegas sun. He'll work his butt off in those five years, completing 10 houses per week. Taking two weeks off, he earns $150,000/year. His employer, if he's lucky, makes $50/house after paying for his labor and the equipment installed in the house. After paying for the worker's training and equipment, the employer makes $22,500 by employing Worker A. After taxes, Worker A takes home $100,000 and the employer takes home $15,075 or $30.15 per house.
Worker B will work for 6 months under the same conditions. But Worker B's productivity is half of what Worker A will do. Therefore, in the six months he works, Worker B will make $39,000 and the employer will make $6,500 ($4,000 after paying for training and equipment). After taxes, Worker B takes home $29,250 and the employer takes home $2,680 or $20.62 per house.
These aren't made-up numbers or scenarios, they are averages for HVAC in Las Vegas, NV. Worker A is the "cheap" foreign labor. Worker B is the "expensive" domestic labor. Longevity and productivity expectations for these two types of laborers are spot on.
With Worker A, the employer's ROI is 600% vs. 107% with Worker B. Worker A pays $50,000 in taxes (including Social Security which he will never claim). Worker B pays $9,750 and he will claim Social Security. To complete the same number of houses in the first year, the employer has to employ twice as many people and make four times the training investment if he uses Worker B (the investment continues in years 2-5 for Worker B, but ends in year 1 for Worker A). That means four Worker B families using government services vs. one Worker A family, a reduction in taxes paid by the employer, and an increase in the home price.
So, with Worker A, the home price is lower, profits and take-home pay are higher, the tax burden is lower, and the taxes paid are higher. Who's getting hurt again? Oh, yeah. Worker B who doesn't want to work in the first place. So, his family will collect welfare paid for by Worker A. There's the true injustice!
Posted by: Brock at December 05, 2005 07:34 PM (582rg)

I was not directing this to foreign workers, but specifically to illegal aliens who are employed by companies in America.
There's numerous holes in your example, including the idea that worker B families will be using government services and worker A families will not -- when it is actually the opposite.
In addition, it assumes all the worker A workers will continue to work forever, while worker B workers will all only work 6 months at a time, and all worker B workers will be new, inexperienced workers.
And to even suggest that illegal aliens are paying for welfare for citizens shows your main point is WAY off. Instead, illegal aliens are using tens of billions of dollars of the welfare system while paying substantially LESS into the system -- these are documented facts (which I don't have links to right now, darn it...)

Of course no illegals work under the table and pay no taxes other than sales tax on the goods they buy.
Got it.

Christian Persecution
When I make comments, both here and on other blogs, about Christians being persecuted in America today, some of those on the left laugh. They claim that it simply isn't possible and that it isn't happening. Well, they are wrong, and here's a huge example of it.
I first read this story on Cross Blogging a week or so ago, but I haven't had time to post about it. I cannot let it sit any longer.
Can you imagine 7- and 8-year old children attending a government-run school in America today and participating in coloring and learning for December? The students might learn about Jesus, King of the Jews, who was God come to earth.
They might put on a play where they re-enact the manger scene with Joseph, Mary, angels and shepherds. They might learn about the 10 commandments and even be expected to memorize them.
The students might be given Bible verses and have different verses that they would be expected to memorize each week. They might even say prayers ending with, "In Jesus name we pray, Amen."
They might even learn about the real meaning of Easter, complete with the entire resurrection story about Jesus and all His miracles. They might read stories and re-enact the story of the loaves and the fishes.

Are you talking about Dearborn, Michigan?
Because this is happening in there schools.
Dearborn is the largest Muslim concentration outside of the Middle East and they bow down to the Muslims in that school district going as far as hiring Arabic speaking teachers to teach the students so they don't have to learn to speak english.

I actually used a comparison showing the ACLU's fighting usage of the Christian bible in teaching American Lit (which just is not possible to teach without the bible because there are so many references one just will not "get" without it) while supporting what was going on in Cali to show proof anti-Christianity and not one lefty on that board saw a thing wrong with this. Said it was ok because it was for "educational purposes" while using the Christian bible for any purpose is "religious" in nature. Even went so far as to say that "personal prayer" should be banned as well because it might make someone "feel" uncomfortable. They wouldn't weigh in on banning personal prayer of Islamists as well as Christians in America's public schools but changed the subject. There is so much hatred toward Christians they can't see straight or think clearly. Or just don't care.
Ew, I rambled.
Sorry.

You are obviously deeply confused about the meaning of the word and the concept of "persecuted". This isn't it. This is learning about another culture through roll playing. I agree that it crosses the line of first-fourteenth amendment establishment clause law, although nothing will be done about it. On the contrary, such things will be encouraged because, well, learning about the culture and religion of moderate Islam is important, I guess. You really need to do some reading about persecution. Check out flaying alive, feeding to lions, imolation, crucifixion either right side up or up side down, and other truly barbaric practices. What you cite as persecution is absolutely a joke and makes a mockery of language. There are Christians that are being persecuted in the world today, though not in America that I'm aware of.

As I said, "And yes, Christians are much more persecuted in other areas of the globe -- most notably where islam thrives -- but the war against Christianity HAS come to America, whether you want to admit it or not."

Ya know what's funny? There is supposedly an 85% majority of Americans that call themselves Christian, yet people think that the other 15% are going to destroy Christianity.
Let's take a look at something that all these "War on Christianity" pundits don't want to address:
Christianity used to be the religion that was taught in schools. Any student of any other religion had to sit there and be spoon-fed massive doses of Christianity. No one raised their voice for a very long time. Now there are a very few instances of other religions being taught in schools and the pundits get their panties in a bunch and start screaming "HOLY WAR".
Get over it and focus on the real problems in America...
-13 million American children living in poverty (something that the overwhelming 85% majority of Christians in America somehow have not addressed with any real concern)
-A war based on lies and no concern for the aftermath.
-The treasonous outing of a CIA agent during a time of war and heightened terrorist activity.
-Countless people being slaughtered in Africa.
There's a lot of stuff going on that is MUCH more important than whether someone is allowed to display their religion in public. Besides, Jesus Christ said in Matthew 6:5-6 (NLT)
5 "And now about prayer. When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I assure you, that is all the reward they will ever get. 6 But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father secretly. Then your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you."
Kinda debunks the whole argument about Christians praying in public, eh? Basically, when a Christian prays in public, they are disobeying a commandment of Christ, and therefore become something less than a Christian. But I suppose if Christians want to fight a political battle than obeying Christ, then that is their right in America. Just a shame that they would choose to do so.
FYI, I'm a Christian myself. Just not one that likes to label every perceived slight as a war.

Jim Black Above the Law
Jim Black is just now
trying to enforce the law -- laws that he has broken repeatedly and may be under investigation by the FBI for breaking.
However, he's appointed a "committee" to "consider strengthening lobbying laws." As John Hood, president of the non-partisan John Locke Foundation says quite accurately, "HeÂ’s announcing appointments to his damage-control commission."
As a reminder, Jim Black is at the center of the controversy surrounding the "resignation" of at least 3 officials named to the lottery commission for alleged kickbacks and outright payoffs and employment by Scientific Games, the company highly likely to be named to run the NC lottery.
And of course, Jim Black's suggested changes won't take effect until 2007, so Jim Black, since he will write the new rules through his pawns on the committee he appoints, will have plenty of time to inform the lobbyists how to avoid breaking the law and still pad his pocketbook.

New Neighbor #36
Once again, it's time to introduce a new neighbor. Each week I pick a blog at random from the large Evangelical Blogroll over there on the right and introduce it to you good readers. This week:
Rob has moved to a new blog recently, just a couple months ago, from
a blogspot blog. He's got a new blog, but I'm not positive what system is running it (wordpress?). Sure looks nice, though.
He's done something that seems to be a trend in blogs these days -- putting menus across the top to allow even more content on the blog (gee, much like I did here, but a bit different). He tells all about his move here.
Recently with all the activity in the College Football world, orangejack is quite focused on the bowl activities. He's also got a new bowl system. Me, I'd just go with a darn playoff system.
He's got lots of neat photos, including a brontosaurus photo.
So head on over and take a look -- lots of neat stuff and regular updates. Heck, he's got a whole category just for blog and RSS tips!

Football Terms
That 1 Guy reminds us that
Smiling Dynamite was looking for "unusual" football phrases.
I think the one I miss the most when I watch games today is "jailbreak." Does anyone else remember when there was a massive rush of players towards the ball that it was described as a jailbreak? You just don't hear that one any more.
And while I'm on the topic, where are they finding these moron announcers these days? When a flag is dropped, the location nearly ALWAYS will tell you what the penalty is. But with the exception of the Sunday night guys, no announcer seems to know!
For example, when a flag is thrown and the play is called dead just as, or before the ball is snapped, the offense moved and it's a false start. The only time there's an exception to that is if the defense made contact with the offensive players. Yet the announcers sit back and say, "Oh, there's a flag. Let's wait and see what that is."
And yes, I could do a better job than a lot of those people...of course I'm usually watching the Dolphins who get the... well... not the first string announcers, I'm sure...

It's time for the weekly new neighbor feature...
But at the moment I'm writing this, the blogroll that I use to find new neighbors is broken and showing me nothing -- so I can't pick a new neighbor.
I'll wait until later tonight and see if I can get to the blogroll. If I can, the new neighbor feature will return this evening (or early tomorrow am). If not, well, I'll just make up something else.

Elephants in NC

The North Carolina zoo is expanding -- in a BIG way. They've been working on this expansion of their elephant exhibit for a number of years. They currently have just 3 elephants, but they're building and building more space to include almost a dozen.
I've followed and helped with these developments over the years. I have been a contributing member of the zoo for many years now. I visit at least 3 times a year, usually more often, despite the fact that the zoo is about a 1.5 hour drive.
The NC zoo really is awesome. They have 500 acres of land that they're using now for exhibits from Africa, North America, and Austrailia. This zoo is set up that the animals are roaming and you walk around (a lot!) to visit them. If you've never seen this zoo, you really should (but be prepared to walk).
In fact, the new elephant exhibit will be 7 acres -- only Disney's Animal Kingdom has a larger elephant exhibit (other than that place south of France). The zoo also has an additional 900 acres that they can use for further expansion and development.
One of the reasons I really love the NC zoo? It is almost entirely privately funded. So I like my zoo animals, and I'm paying for them. If you don't like them, you don't have to pay for them.

Another Marine Joke
Sent along by livelaughlove_02 in the comments:
A college professor, an avowed atheist and active in the ACLU, was teaching his class. He shocked several of his students when he flatly stated that once and for all he was going to prove there was no God. Addressing the ceiling he shouted: “GOD, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I’ll give you exactly 15 minutes!!!!!”
The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by. ” I’m waiting, God - if you’re real, knock me off this platform!!!!” Again after 4 minutes, the professor taunted God saying, “Here I am, God!!! I’m still waiting!!!” His count down got down to the last few seconds when a Marine, just released from the Marines after serving in Afghanistan and Iraq and newly registered in the class, walked up to the Professor. The Marine hit him full force in the face, and sent the Professor tumbling from his lofty platform. The Professor was out cold.
The students were stunned and shocked. They began to babble in confusion. The Marine nonchalantly took his seat in the front row and sat silent. The class looked at him and fell silent…waiting. Eventually, the professor came to and was noticeably shaken. He looked at the Marine in the front row. When the professor regained his senses and could speak he asked: “What the hell is the matter with you! Why did you do that”?
“God was really busy, protecting America’s soldiers, who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot…so he sent me!!”

Winston Churchill Says
Some see private enterprise as a predatory target to be shot, others as a cow to be milked, but few are those who see it as a sturdy horse pulling the wagon.
That would be 99% of elected representatives in Congress for the first two.
We contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.
But Congress sees taxes as helping the man by taking the water out of the bucket.
You have enemies? Good. That means youÂ’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.
Very few politicians have enemies.
The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.
And the left, especially, is more interested in the latter.

Punish Illegals
Back in 2001, Malaysia tried a
solution to deal with illegal immigrants in their country. I can't find any follow-up data on how well it worked. Anyone opposed to giving that a try in America?

I like Jerry Pournelle's "bounty on illegals" idea (first ennunciated several years ago and restated last week at Chaos Manor in Perspective) coupled with Dafydd ab Hugh's (Big Lizards Blog) "walls and gates" concept, which includes specific prescriptions on genuine assimilation.

Both EXCELLENT places to lurk while people a LOT smarter than I (and a very few not-so) discuss issues like this from many different angles.

NC Government is Happy
Why? Why is government happy? One of two reasons -- money or power. They've either increased their money supply (so they can spend more), or they've increased their power -- at the expense of freedom. And these two go hand-in-hand, as if they take money from people, they increase their power.
This year the government took more money then they thought they would get -- $71 MILLION more than expected. Don't hold your breath for the refund -- they've likely already spent it.
Worse, the news report says, "The extra revenue is largely because of increases in money from corporate and personal income taxes."
LARGELY? No, you idiots, it is 100% from increases from taxes -- that's the ONLY way government gets money is via a tax. That's $71,000,000.00 that could have been spent by the people who earned it -- who are out that money now.
And the shysters in the government won't even feel bad about taking all that money from the people.

All NC Children Now Safe
Well, at least according to the North Carolina General Assembly, anyway.
You see, yesterday, December 1, 2005, a new law went into effect that BANS 7-year old children from driving ATVs. Older children are restricted to smaller, "less-powerful" models.
Aren't you glad that there's so little for police to do in North Carolina that they have time to wander around the backyards and forests of the state to check all people riding ATVs to ensure that none of them are 7 years old?
And I'm sure these new enforcement officers will be checking birth certificates for those who "appear" too young to be on the 250cc models as well.
Folks, laws that sound good but absolutely cannot be enforced are worse than useless -- it completely undermines the system of laws in this country. If there are more laws than can be enforced, it creates a system of selective enforcement -- those charge with enforcing the laws pick and choose which ones they, personally, want to enforce on any given day.
Are there ANY statesmen left in this country? What a wonderful world it would be if we could elect statesmen who were interested in government and politics rather than politicians that are ONLY interested in keeping their own job (no matter the costs) and spending money (no matter the reason).

So, will kids 7 & over be required to carry ID with them now?

Well, Harvey, they're going to have to find some way to prove they're old enough to drive, won't they? I wonder how soon it will be before the state starts issuing ATV driver's licenses to kids... if they pass the safety course and pay the state fee!

Hump or Death
Regular reader and commenter (yet blogless) tomslick12 (there's 12 of them?) makes a suggestion for voting -- which I think will apply in the 2008 presidential election, unless some drastic changes happen.
I still think Klinton will be the Democrat nominee, but it might be Dean. I don't know who the Republican candidate will be, but McCain is convincing a few. I don't see anyone standing up yet to really take control (I do hope it will change). Somehow I see the Presidential ticket in 2008 looking something like this:
President of the United States (Select one):
[ ] Death by Burning (R)
[ ] Death by Drowning (D)
[ ] Guaranteed losing vote (I)

Na, I don't think it will be Hillary, half the country hates her and she is not even running plus she does not appeal to their base since she is a neo-con. I expect a nasty scene at the DNC when they announce their candidate because we all know that Hillary wants the nomination. If you are the betting type we could have a wager. What would you bet that she makes the final two?

OK. I'm lost. I'm trying to get the title to fit the post. Is it just too late and my brain quit? Where does the humping come in?

I'm hurt that you say my independant vote is a gaurenteed loser. We had Jesse Ventura as Governor!

I still have my money on it being Kerry vs McCain. Dean is a possibility, maybe Senator Gone, I mean Breck Girl, damm it, John Edwards. Fingers do not want to cooperate with brain.

Sorry, Bou, it was an obscure Mel Brooks reference.

Contagion, we're not going there, are we?

And Teach, stop scaring it, you're scaring the children! Besides, the Republicans get to pick someone, too.

Stop the ACLU
Today I just didn't have the time to get things together and put up the usual anti-ACLU rant. I guess to be more "positive," I should instead call these rants the pro-freedom rants, since 99% of everything the ACLU does is designed to destroy freedom -- hating Christianity is just a byproduct of that action.
Instead, I'm sure, as is the case nearly every other day, the folks over at the Stop the ACLU blog are sure to have some good information up there. If you've never taken the time to visit that blog, head on over -- even if it's just for a minute. They really do have accurate, factual information about the the ACLU is doing -- even if it usually is bad news for lovers of freedom.
