Gráinne Ní Mháille

Argh, mateys -- why be there no pirates of Ireland? Well, perhaps there be, and ye just didn't know rightly about her. HER? Yes, indeed, the ol Irish lass of Gráinne Ní Mháille may be the most well-known Irish Pirate!

If'n ye not from the blessed isle, ye might know her as Grace O'Malley -- but don't let her hear ye callin her that! Gráinne lived from about 1530 to 1603 and ruled all that she could see (even if she was a bit blind in the one eye there). You can read more about Gráinne Ní Mháille here.

St. Pat's Roundup, Part I

To help you in your celebration of the wonderful holiday of St. Patrick's Day, I present to you other who have already started celebrating today:

Tammi talks about coloring the water in her candles green because she misses Chicago. Every time I think of Chicago and St. Pat's, I ALWAYS think of Tommy Lee Jones -- they can color it green this one day a year, why can't they color it every other day? She also has a couple nice toasts and a pot o gold up! She's also posted some nice 'ol Irish jokes.

William Teach provides some St. Patty's Day advice for you -- good advice, too, I might add, for any other day of the year...

Smokey has a nice joke up, too.

Michelle Malkin tells about pandering to the Irish criminals on this holiday. The only consolation is that the Irish are probably so drunk they won't remember who said what. And yes, I oppose the Irish breaking immigration laws, too.

Cao's got one of my favorite Irish jokes of all time posted. She's also got a couple fine Irish recipes posted. I wish I had time to try them tonight, but maybe tomorrow...

Contagion, that damn scotsman, complains, but agrees to put aside his bastard scottish heritage for the day to help we Irish celebrate a bit.

Jo's Cafe has a few Saint Pat's specials up for grabs.

Blackfive tries to remote blog on his Irish Palm Pilot...

Saint Patrick's Day!

Ah, it's finally here!

Someone tell me again why this isn't a national holiday? Oh, right, everyone can't be Irish. So I'll be at work all day, as I'm sure most will today, despite the great historical significance of this day. I would suggest today that everyone put down their Carlsberg for a day and go get some Guinness.

Yes, I'm aware that you can't get green beer out of Guinness. That's a good thing. Feel free to grab some Bud Light or something for your green beer needs, then switch back to the Guinness. If that stuff is too strong for you (take one sip, anyway -- how do you know you don't like it if you've never tried it?) -- Killian's Irish Red is an approved substitute.

Be thinking and planning now, before you drive home, so you know which supplies to get on the way. Plan now with backup plans in case your primary supplier has run out today, so you know which stores to head to an alternative.

Tom Tancredo & Southern Leadership Conference

There seems to be a bit of a disagreement whether Tom Tancredo was excluded from a conference gathering of Republicans because the gathering only wanted "top-tier" Republican presidential candidates.

At this time, the conference says they never heard from Tancredo, but Tancredo's "people" claim they did contact the conference but were not invited. Six other Republicans who are considered candidates for the 2008 election have been invited to speak, but Mr. Tancredo is not allowed to speak.

Look, Tom Tancredo is the ONLY elected government person I know of now that will even consider doing ANYTHING about the hundred-billion dollar problem of criminal immigration. People are breaking laws openly and being rewarded with taxpayer cash. Democrats like it and Republicans like it -- NO ONE will even talk about it -- except Tom Tancredo.

I think Tancredo could win a presidential election with a massive landslide of support on this one, single issue. Sure, he's lose California and New York, but he would win nearly every other state in the union -- because this issue is a complete winner and no one else will touch it. Heed my words now -- Tom Tancredo, should he choose to officially run, will be a big winner.

City Competition?

I've mentioned previously the crap that is cities giving away cash to government. You can now read an analysis of why one particular city "won" one contract while another "won" a different contract.

What a pile of crap. This was NOT cities "bidding for contracts." Instead, this was cities "bidding" to see who could GIVE AWAY the most cash to private companies. That is NOT freedom. The supreme court is considering whether this activity is even legal (I submit that it very clearly is unconstitutional).

Competition works -- when PRIVATE enterprises compete. Government is utterly and totally incapable of competition -- because they have literally unlimited funds to "give away" by simply taking more from workers. That is wrong, no matter how you try and sell it.

North Carolina House District 95 Debate

Ah, those who didn't make it to the show, you did miss a good time.

Tonight was the debate between two Republicans who are facing off in the primary for North Carolina House District 95. There is no Democrat registered, so the winner of the primary on May 2nd will be elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives.

As I figured, I could not get any internet at the actual restaurant. So I took notes and pictures and here's the report. It was good food, and you could have met Ogre in person, so you really missed out!

The Men of the West

Another day before Saint Patrick's Day -- and another Irish drinking tune to go along with it. Another great song to sing while drinking, especially that last line of the chorus: "HURRAH for the men of the West."

Have a listen:

When you honor in song and in story
The names of the patriot men,
Whose valor has covered with glory
Full many a mountain and glen,
Forget not the boys of the heather
Who rallied their bravest and best
When Ireland was broken in Wexford
And looked for revenge to the West.

I give you the gallant old West, boys,
Where rallied our bravest and best
When Ireland lay broken and bleeding;
Hurrah for the men of the West!

The hilltops with glory were glowing
'Twas the eve of a bright harvest day,
When the ship we'd been wearily waiting
Sailed into Killala's broad bay.
And over the hills went the slogan
To awaken in every breast
The fire that has never been quenched, boys,
Among the true hearts of the West.

I give you the gallant old West, boys,
Where rallied our bravest and best
When Ireland lay broken and bleeding;
Hurrah for the men of the West!

Killala was ours ere the midnight,
And high over Ballina town
Our banners in triumph were waving
Before the next sun had gone down.
We gathered to speed the good work, boys
The true men from near and afar;
And history can tell how we routed
The redcoats through old Castlebar.

I give you the gallant old West, boys,
Where rallied our bravest and best
When Ireland lay broken and bleeding;
Hurrah for the men of the West!

And pledge me the stout sons of France, boys,
Bold Humbert and all his brave men,
Whose tramp, like the trumpet of battle,
Brought hope to the drooping again.
Since Ireland has caught to her bosom
On many a mountain and hill
The gallants who fell, so they're here, boys,
To cheer us to victory still.

I give you the gallant old West, boys,
Where rallied our bravest and best
When Ireland lay broken and bleeding;
Hurrah for the men of the West!

Though all the bright dreamings we cherished
Went down in disaster and woe,
The spirit of old is still with us
That never would bend to the foe.
And Connaught is ready whenever
The loud rolling tuck of the drum
Rings out to awaken the echoes
And tell us the morning has come.

I give you the gallant old West, boys,
Where rallied our bravest and best
When Ireland lay broken and bleeding;
Hurrah for the men of the West!

Is a Moment of Silence Prayer?

Another week, more attempts at destroying freedom by the ACLU. This week, Gribbit provides some commentary:

The ACLU has consistently opposed having prayer in public schools. But what truly constitutes prayer? How about a moment of silence where a student can say a Hail Mary or a small prayer, internally reflect, meditate, sleep, do homework, or just plain decompress and prepare for their day? Does this constitute prayer? I wouldn't think so.

Having a 2 -3 minute forced moment of silence at the beginning of the day to accommodate the personal religious convictions of children, or to allow them to do whatever they feel the need to do silently, is something that I think would be a good compromise to those who condemn the idea of prayer in schools.

Also keep in mind that the major objection to prayer in schools is the leftist idea of Separation of Church and State. There is NO mention of separation of church and state in the entire Constitution. It appears NO WHERE. And if you try to mention the establishment clause I'll slap your stupid ass. Pay attention to the wording. And don't you dare mention interpretation of anything, it's written in English for the Love of Mike.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Impeach Ruth Bader Ginsburg

I've heard it said that it won't happen. Why? Because Democrats and Republicans couldn't agree on anything, much less something of this much importance. Democrats are completely beyond any ability to see or comprehend doing what is right -- they will only do things that will give them and their party more power.

Judges on the US Supreme Court can only be removed from their office if they resign or are impeached. In all the years of history of this country, only one supreme court judge was ever impeached, Samuel Chase, was acquitted by the Senate -- so no Supreme Court judge has ever been removed from the bench. That would make impeachment near impossible.

However, unlike a sitting president, the only guidelines for impeaching a Supreme Court Judge is that they serve "during good behavior." So if they do not have "good behavior," they can be impeached -- literally it's as simple as that.

All that's needed is articles of impeachment to be drawn up in the US House of Representatives, and they need a simple majority vote to be approved. If they pass, the judge has been impeached. Then, just as when Clinton was impeached, the Senate holds a trial and needs a 2/3 majority to convict -- that's where the problem would be.

So, did Judge Ginsberg have "good behavior?" Feel free to read her own words:

It's hard for me to see that the use of foreign decisional law is an up-or-down proposition. I see it rather as a pool of potential and useful information and thought that must be mined with caution and restraint.

"We can derive assistance from . . . foreign case law, but we are in no way bound to follow it."

Judges in the United States are free to consult all manner of commentary

Compare that to
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.

So she lied.

Powerline points out that the way she uses words indicates that she does not care one whit about what the Constitution says, she's more interested in finding someone, anywhere on the planet, who agrees with what SHE wants, and then she'll use that as a reference.

He's also got a great line in there about homosexual sodomy. The court recently based their decision to rule for states based on international opinion. Did anyone ask the muslims their opinion? If the US Supreme court is supposed to use international opinions, why don't the muslims get to weigh in?

She also really blasts her fellow justices who disagree with her liberal positions. In fact, if you read the article, it almost sounds like she's talking at a fund raiser for the Democrat Base -- it's anti-American and praises just about every other country she talks about as being better than America.

Is that "good behavior" from a United States Supreme Court Justice? Clearly not. But there's exactly a zero percent chance you could get any Senate Democrat to EVER vote to convict her of impeachment -- no matter what else she might do.

(Hat tip to Michelle Malkin).

UPDATE: K.T. Cat has a few questions for the insane judgemental Ginsberg.

Abortion Confusion

I just read a "news report" about a blogger who recently posted instructions on how to perform an abortion. I don't want to see the instructions, so no, I'm not providing a link to them.

But the whole article intentionally misleads regarding abortion. It's primary focus is that there will be "back alley abortions" if Roe v. Wade is overturned. This shows a complete and total (likely intentional) misunderstanding of laws and the Constitution. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, nothing happens -- literally.

Roe v. Wade was about the federal government vs. states rights. That decision said that states do not have permission to ban abortions. By removing permission for a ban, nothing happens. In other words, even if Roe v. Wade is overturned, there's about a 100% chance that abortions will still be legal in CA, NY, and MA. If the decision is overturned, all that will do is allow states to make their own laws.

Yes, some states will ban abortions -- but that's what a republic is supposed to be -- people in their own states making laws for themselves. However, those who support Roe v. Wade -- intentionally or unintentionally -- are opposing people having a right to choose -- their own laws.

Good School News!

...So you know it's got nothing to do with the hopeless cesspool that is government-run "public" education system. Homeschooling is on the rise in North Carolina. It's up 36% in the last 5 years and continues to grow each year at a rate of about 8 to 10%. That's awesome. This shows that more and more people are acknowledging that the government is incompetent at teaching, well, anything.

And no, for those who know nothing about homeschooling other than what the liberal news media will tell you, it's not just religious nuts. The #1 reason that people are giving for homeschooling in North Carolina is "concern about the school environment."

Gee, you mean parents disagree with Mecklenburg County's School Board king Joe White, who says that children should experience the "diversity" of sitting next to convicted sex offenders in public school? Or maybe it's the arbitrary division of people by age, rather than by ability.

Homeschoolers ARE a success, by all measures. They are more educated, they are more well-rounded. They score higher on standardized academic tests and they are more socially adjusted (see here, and here) than those who have been sheltered in the walls of a school.

I used to say that homeschooling isn't for everyone -- I don't think that's quite right. You should get your children out of, and away from, the filth and waste that is the government school. If you can homeschool, that IS the best option -- I have yet to meet ANYONE who has tried homeschooling that did not like it.

Oh, and in North Carolina? You won't be alone -- at least 63,000 children are being homeschooled. If that were one school district, it would be the 4th largest in the state -- and that really is good news.

NC Government Thieves

Article V of the North Carolina State Constitution:

Sec. 5. Acts levying taxes to state objects.

Every act of the General Assembly levying a tax shall state the special object to which it is to be applied, and it shall be applied to no other purpose.

That is all that appears in that article. There's no other details or descriptions, as to most people, that's pretty darn obvious. However, the Democrat-controlled legislature doesn't like that section, so they just ignore it. For over a decade, each and every year the Democrats in the legislature vote to ignore that portion of the Constitution as they move money raised for highways and place it into the general fund.

No, it's not legal. But then again, these people get to make the laws, so they clearly and obviously ignore the law whenever they want. The only way to stop them is to get people who actually respect the law into elected office. Any Democrat incumbent automatically excludes themselves from that category.

Of course, such things always cause trouble. The legislature has been taking literally BILLIONS of dollars away from roads. The money has been raised, the taxes have been paid, but the money has been taken by the Democrats to be given to whomever they want -- so the roads in North Carolina are bad -- REALLY bad -- worse than NJ bad.

So what's the solution? No, it's not "use the road taxes for roads" as logic would dictate. No, the government solution to the government-created problem is to take more money! Yes, that's right! The Democrat-run legislature literally sees "no other choice here" -- but to take county money to pay for roads instead of using the damn highways taxes to pay for them!

Oh, how I yearn for freedom and just a tiny, itsy little bit of common sense in government.

A wee bit 'o Irish Wit

Today's celebration of Saint Patrick's Day Half-Month Celebration continues. For those who might be a wee bit tired 'o the Irish singin' (what's wrong with ye?), today we've got some Irish jokes (care of Raven):

Definition of an Irish husband: He hasn't kissed his wife for twenty years, but he will kill any man who does.

~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~
Murphy told Quinn that his wife was driving him to drink. Quinn thinks he's very lucky because his own wife makes him walk.
~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~

The late Bishop Sheen stated that the reason the Irish fight so often among themselves is that they're always assured of having a worthy opponent.

~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~
An American lawyer asked, "Paddy, why is it that whenever you ask an Irishman a question, he answers with another question?" "Who told you that?" asked Paddy.
~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~

Question - Why are Irish jokes so simple?
Answer - So the English can understand them.

~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~
Reilly went to trial for armed robbery. The jury foreman came out and announced, "Not guilty." "That's grand!" shouted Reilly. "Does that mean I can keep the money?"
~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~

Irish lass customer: "Could I be trying on that dress in the window?" Shopkeeper: "I'd prefer that you use the dressing room."

~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~
Mrs. Feeney shouted from the kitchen, "Is that you I hear spittin' in the vase on the mantle piece?" "No," said himself, "but I'm gettin' closer all the time."
~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~

Q. What do you call an Irishman who knows how to control a wife?
A. A bachelor.

~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~
Finnegin: My wife has a terrible habit of staying up 'til two o'clock in the morning. I can't break her of it. Keenan: What on earth is she doin' at that time? Finnegin: Waitin' for me to come home.
~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~

Slaney phoned the maternity ward at the hospital. "Quick!" He said. "Send an ambulance, my wife is goin' to have a baby!" "Tell me, is this her first baby?" the intern asked. "No, this is her husband, Kevin, speakin'."

-~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~

"O'Ryan," asked the druggist, "did that mudpack I gave you improve your wife's appearance?" "It did surely," replied O'Ryan, "but it keeps fallin' off!"

~~~~#~~~#~~~#~~~~
Did you hear about the Irish newlyweds who sat up all night on their honeymoon waiting for their sexual relations to arrive?
*** DRINK WARNING *** *** DRINK WARNING *** *** DRINK WARNING ***
Don't say I didn't warn you.
Taxes Fair? Not Likely?
Why aren't taxes fair? Why do liberals want everything else BUT taxes to be fair? There's no logical reason NOT to support the fair tax -- heck I'd pay MORE in taxes (a LOT more), but I still support it! Here's this week's blogburst:
One question that seems to be bantered about from time to time as we delve into the issues surrounding the Fair Tax is the corporate tax. It would seem that many citizens are concerned that if the Fair Tax were enacted, corporations would not pay taxes at all. What our fellow citizens have not yet grasped is the false facade that is corporations. All citizens are able to see is the news thrust in their faces that aggrandizes the profits these corporations bring home. Case in point, during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, there was a time in the news when gas and oil companies were demonized for their outrageous profits.
Yet, our citizens do not stop to consider just what a corporation truly is. A corporation is nothing but a legal fiction, which means that there are individuals behind these fictions. Individuals just like you and I. more...
It's Official: No Free Speech in the Press
Here you go. The first case I'm aware of in which the editor of a newspaper in AMERICA has actually been fired for printing the infamous "Mohammed cartoons."
This board that fired him was "students and faculty" of the University of Illinois. By publishing those cartoons, they found he violated policies about "thoughtful discussion." The ironies and incredible double standards are so obvious, I won't even bother describing them here. Yes, here in America, THE PRESS is not allowed to have freedom of speech at UI. The students should get up and walk out -- completely -- take their money and go elsewhere. But they won't, because they just don't care.
"The board is disappointed with this outcome." That's only a half-truth. They are happy, excited, and overjoyed that Acton is gone as the editor, because he questioned their alternate reality that celebrates Islam and cower in utter fear of Islam. The only thing they are disappointed about is the idea that Acton did not join them in their cowering in fear and instead prints the truth.
All Politicians Stink (except Dems)
At least according to Bob Geary, Indy Week, a supposed "independent" newspaper in Durham, NC. I imagine that anyone who disagrees with the total socialist line in Durham might be considered an independent -- Durham is rather proud of it's nickname of "Berkeley of the East."
In his article, Mr. Geary claims that the only reason that Democrats keep winning in North Carolina is because the Republicans have bad ideas. At first, he does mention that nationally, the Democrats have no ideas at all. Then he complains that the North Carolina Republican ideas are bad -- but the Democrat ideas are okay.
He complains that the Republicans don't support raising prices on houses in Wake county by at least $3,000 each so the government can have more money. He complains that the Republicans actually want to reduce spending by government, thinly veiling in the old "How are they going to pay for that?" rhetoric.
He likes increases in gas taxes because he thinks it's only a little bit. He's glad the Democrats got a lottery in place so that poor people might have a chance. He outlines one of the smoke and mirrors games that the Democrats play to shift tax money from the county to the state and back again -- and has no problem with that one -- whose net result will be an increase of $1 to $2 billion in increased revenues to the state.
Mr. Geary may write for an alleged "independent" newspaper and try to appear to be a moderate stuck in the middle, but he clearly support the Democrat platform of more: more taxes, more government, more control. The only reason you can't see the Republican plans, Mr. Geary, is because you don't want to.
