Government vs. People
Here at this blog, I often complain about the government. I complain that it's no longer government for the people (or even by the people, any more). But sometimes readers may not completely understand what I'm talking about. To that end, here is an example of a government response and a freedom-based response:
Let's say you witness a situation created by government: the major roads leading into a city are congested with a large amount of traffic. Upon further observation, you can see that most of the traffic is created by individuals in their cars. While some observers may say that this is not even a problem, for the sake of discussion, we'll accept that there's a problem here.
Now, those who are interested in government-based solutions (socialists, communists, members of the Democrat Party, the media, etc) will all observe and see the problem. Then any solution that will be generated will be based on more government control. These types of people will look at the problem and say, "We've got to do something to STOP these people from creating the traffic jam." In this case, as can be witnessed around the country, government tries to STOP people from causing the traffic jam -- they attempt to force people into mass transit. They waste space trying to force people to drive in carpool lanes. They attempt to force people to stop driving by installing taxes and tolls. In all cases, however, all their efforts are focused on forcing people to do something.
In a freedom-based society, government would not try to force people to do anything (other than prevent them from forcing others to do things). A government that was for the people and by the people would instead ask questions like, "How can we let people do what they desire here and reduce the traffic?" They might actually build more roads. They might adjust the lanes so that more lanes are inbound in the mornings (and not HOV-only). They might move the government offices (and their employees) to a location that would remove those employees from the traffic streams. But in all cases, they would not try and adjust people and tell them what to do.
So go ahead and pick a side -- most people already have. Unfortunately, those who side with me, for freedom, often find themselves aligned against the government behemoth -- and paying for the government to take away their very own freedoms. I just wish more people honestly wanted freedom.

Can I be on your side, Ogre?
I think of the health care situation. Why do people come here to get seen by a doctor? Because our system is fast and efficient while the government isn't mandating everything. I mean seriously, how many things can you think of that the government does efficiently? However, in a free, capitalist society everybody is constantly trying to do a better job so that they get more business. The government wants to keep businesses in check - what keeps a person in check better than another person competing against him?
In a perfect society, roads would be built by private businesses, not organized by the government.

There is one thing that government does well: increase itself.
And yes, I welcome you to be on my side. However, since most people do not want to be on our side, we may have to move somewhere so we do not force people to have freedom. I suggest New Hampshire and the Free State Project...

I envy the people in Japan and Europe and South America who have excellent inexpensive public transportation systems where they can commute to work and travel with their families without spending the $500-$1,000/month to own and operate a private automobile.
But perhaps your idea is better. Just PAVE THE PLANET!! One giant slab of asphalt from the south pole to the north pole just so people can hop in their SUV's and drive anywhere they want at any time they want ... after all, who has the time to wait 5 minutes for the next train or, worse yet, suffer the indignity of ACTUALLY WALKING to and from the public transportation vehicles... way too risky for the average American to attempt so much exercise in a single day.

If you envy the people in Europe who have "free" public transportation, why don't you live there? I'm being serious. If you think their system is so much better, you should move there. One of the few freedoms left to Americans is the freedom to move. If you don't want to spend the money for a private automobile, no one is forcing you to, either.

Iran Asks for Help
The people of Iran
want help. I wonder who will help them.
According to the research, 58% of the people in Iran want help from a foreign military to remove I'mADinnerJacket from power. 79% of the people of Iran want a Democratic government, instead of the current Sharia totalitarian dictatorship. A full 43% of the people even support a military strike to stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb! And I'mADinnerJacket's approval rating is even lower than the US Congress: at 8%.
So, to those who oppose the war on terrorism, those who oppose the war in Iraq. To those who oppose Americans at war everywhere on the planet I have one question: would you help these people? These people who WANT help? These people who are begging for help in getting rid of a madman dictator?
Regardless of your opinions of the war in Iraq, how we got there, why we got there, current progress, etc. Who will stand up and tell these people, "Oh gee, sorry, if you want to get rid of your insane dictator, you're going to have to do it yourself because we're just not interested in helping."
I think perhaps it's time to withdraw from Iraq -- and into Iran. We would be welcomed by the people there.

Unfortunately for them, Iran has national security implications for the USA, meaning Democrats would utterly refuse to condone any sort of actions involving the military or intelligence agencies.
Now, if this was regarding a country like New Zealand, they would be hot to trot.
Absolutely no sarcasm meant, pure serious.
Heck, I have been asking liberals on various sites if they would approve invading Pakistan, what with all their "get OBL now and wipe out AQ" talk, have yet to get a cogent response on topic. Usually, I get some BDS and whiny "if we weren't in Iraq" BS.
I have been asking them for years if we should go after Saudi Arabia, every time they bring up that most of the 9/11 hijackers were from there. Again, no cogent responses.

New Zealand? You really think so? I think today's Democrats won't support any military action anywhere on the planet. They want peace, no matter the cost.

Did you happen to catch the beginning of O'Reilly tonight? Couple of folks who utterly refused to answer what they would do with Pakistan, other then "build more schools" and "use more intelligence." Yup, that should scare the jihadi's.

These people honestly believe that there is no evil in the world (except for America). They seriously believe that if they're nice to terrorists, the terrorists will be nice to them. They think that if they put a daisy in the bomb belt of a terrorist that the terrorist will put the bombs down and start singing peace songs. It's utter insanity.

Redress of Grievences?
If someone handed you a paper with the following printed on it, what would you think?
IS IT RIGHT TO WORK FOR THE "INTERNAL ROBBERY SQUADRON?"
I have the right to remain silent. IRS agents have the right to quit their jobs. If that is not possible, they have a responsibility to work as inefficiently as possible when taking our money, and as quickly as possible when returning it.
I'm here to respectfully ensure they know that I do not appreciate what they are doing and to make them feel uncomfortable...morally, not physically.
IRS taxes fund torture, waste and unconstitutional Federal mandates like the privacy-killing "Real ID."
If you would like to join New Hampshire's peaceful resistance to IRS tyranny, come to
NHFREE.COM
The state's most active web forum
"Keeping NH Free
From Keene to Shining Sea"
Do you feel threatened or endangered? Apparently, you should be terrified. You see, those words, combined with a piece of paper, will get you throw in jail. Seriously.
You see, Dave Ridley did that. He printed up a few papers with those words on them and handed them out at a local IRS office. He was quiet, peaceful, and absolutely did not interfere with anyone. In fact, when he was asked to leave, he DID. And for that, the government threw him in jail for 4 days. Seriously. Apparently he was charged with "distributing handbills."
Wow.
Each day I'm more amazed at the massive power of the federal government. You actually GO TO JAIL for asking an IRS agent if they should work for the government. Not for trespassing, not for interfering with government, not for non-cooperation with government officials, but for asking a question of government.
I'm beyond words. Folks, in case you have any delusions about freedom, see this example: A man has been arrested and jailed for FOUR DAYS for distribution of handbills! I think I'm going to mail a copy of the handbill to the IRS office in Keene right now from right here in North Carolina.

"make them feel uncomfortable...morally"
That could be taking to mean to mentally abuse someone.

Mentally abuse someone you have no power over? What are you going to do, call them stupid? Yeah, that sounds like a reason for jail time. I'm just disgusted beyond words.

I've already mailed out one copy of the dangerous handbill. I wonder if I'll get 4 days in jail for it. Another person is going to the Keene IRS office tomorrow with a sign and no handbills. I'm sure the police will be ready -- I wonder what she'll get charged with.

I mailed my letter to them today.
Apparently the "crime" was distributing handbills. I found the law and have asked my Congressman to get rid of the law. We'll see what he says.
Oh, and Raven? Two more were arrested there today.

ok doh.
educate me. What is a HANDBILL??? In legal terms?
Posted by: Raven at July 20, 2007 12:41 AM (snoH/)

I'm not sure there's an official legal definition.
Here's the law that was broken:
§102-74.415—What is the policy for posting and distributing materials?
All persons entering in or on Federal property are prohibited from—
(a) Distributing free samples of tobacco products in or around Federal buildings, as mandated by Section 636 of Public Law 104-52;
(b) Posting or affixing materials, such as pamphlets, handbills, or flyers, on bulletin boards or elsewhere on GSA-controlled property, except as authorized in 102-74.410, or when these displays are conducted as part of authorized Government activities; and
(c) Distributing materials, such as pamphlets, handbills or flyers, unless conducted as part of authorized Government activities. This prohibition does not apply to public areas of the property as defined in 102-71.20 of this chapter. However, any person or organization proposing to distribute materials in a public area under this section must first obtain a permit from the building manager as specified in subpart D of this part. Any such person or organization must distribute materials only in accordance with the provisions of subpart D of this part. Failure to comply with those provisions is a violation of these regulations.

This is so dumb. We have perverts and robbers and people shooting people in NH; we have many more serious issues to be dealing with. AND this? Our tax cash is being wasted on the arrest and jailing of peaceful citizens who are only trying to make a point? Fercryinoutloud. Keene should be ashamed.

Oh, did I forget to mention the government agency spending time and resources on this? DHS! Yes, Homeland Security is the ones who arrested him.
I send him a letter in jail. It was addressed to Dave Ridley: Outlaw Leafleterr.
Now that's a good idea, AOW. Maybe I'll put on a headscarf and try this to see if they arrest me.

Cows, Constitution, and Commandments
Got this passed along to me in email. Just think about it, would ya?
Three Things to Ponder:
1. Cows
2. The Constitution
3. The Ten Commandments
Cows
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that our government can track a single cow born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she sleeps in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.
The Constitution
They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we're not using it anymore.
The Ten Commandments
The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this:
You cannot post "Thou Shalt Not Steal", "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery", and "Thou Shall Not Lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment.
