A Love Song

Eve of Destruction:

The eastern world, it is explodinÂ’.
Violence flarinÂ’, bullets loadinÂ’
YouÂ’re old enough to kill, but not for votinÂ’
You donÂ’t believe in war, but whatÂ’s that gun youÂ’re totinÂ’
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatinÂ’

But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you donÂ’t believe
WeÂ’re on the eve of destruction.

DonÂ’t you understand what IÂ’m tryinÂ’ to say
CanÂ’t you feel the fears IÂ’m feelinÂ’ today?
If the button is pushed, thereÂ’s no runninÂ’ away

ThereÂ’ll be no one to save, with the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy
ItÂ’s bound to scare you boy

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you donÂ’t believe
WeÂ’re on the eve of destruction.

Yeah, my bloodÂ’s so mad feels like coagulatinÂ’
IÂ’m sitting here just contemplatinÂ’
You canÂ’t twist; the truth, it knows no regulation.
Handful of senators donÂ’t pass legislation
And marches alone canÂ’t bring integration
When human respect is disintegratinÂ’
This whole crazy world is just too frustratinÂ’

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you donÂ’t believe
WeÂ’re on the eve of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for 4 days in space

But when you return, itÂ’s the same old place
The poundinÂ’ of the drum, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but donÂ’t leave a trace
Hate your next-door neighbor, but donÂ’t forget to say prayers

AndÂ… tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend
You donÂ’t believe
WeÂ’re on the eve Of destruction

Mm, no no, you donÂ’t believe
WeÂ’re on the eve of destruction.
Seriously. When P.F. Sloan was interviewed about this song, he said that it was intended as a love song. If you don't admit what's wrong, how can you fix it? How can you heal something if you don't know what's wrong? I was written back in 1964 and performed by Barry McGuire.

Because of the perceived threat by those in power at the time, both men's careers were completely destroyed. They were called the enemy and crushed.

Yet read those words again. It was written over 40 years ago -- and it's so true today. Read it again. Think about it.

How's the eastern world faring today? The place is in flames. They are calling for the destruction of the western world. Does the Jordan River have bodies floating? Maybe not today, but they have recently and may at any time.

The button? When this was written, it was fear of the Russian-US Nuclear war. Now Iran is very, very close to starting a nuclear war. Will it be better than Iran launch a nuke than Russia?

Are you mad? I bet half my readers are mad at something that goes on every single day in this country and around the world.

"You can't twist the truth" -- yet every single day you can see and hear clear examples of twisting of the truth -- people just not even trying to be honest. Senators (and other elected "representatives") pass laws to try and fix things -- and they cannot -- it's simply not possible. When has ANY law solved ANY problem?

"Human respect is disintegratin'" -- look out your door. Do you see anyone giving any respect to anyone? Or do you see people demanding things? People more self-absorbed than ever? People who demand that others do things for them or provide things for them?

Hate in Red China. When the author of this song was interviewed a year after he wrote it, he said that he wanted to write "Red Russia" -- but he heard a voice inside him that told him to write "Red China" -- because, back in 1965, he felt this voice tell him that Russia would fall before the end of the century, but the hatred in China would continue into the next century. How accurate was that?

You can bury your head. You can hide away -- it's sure the easy thing to do. How many of you hold and harbor hatred of someone, somewhere? Why? What good does it do you? How does having ANY hatred of anyone do you any good? How does that help the screwed up condition and situation we have here on this planet?

So what are you going to do about it? Right now, today? It all starts with you.

1 Great post and so true. Good song also. I have it on my ipod. What can we do right now, today? Well, I try to do my part on my blog, sharing my views with friends, voting the right way and hoping the people I vot for will remember why they were voted into office when the time to vote comes. I also pray. After that, I'm not sure what I can do. Maybe that's why people feel so overwhelmed.

2 Indeed it is very difficult to determine what to do. It's VERY easy to feel completely overwhelmed. But everyone can start small. Everyone can do something good. Everyone can do what's right instead of accepting what's wrong.

3 I totally agree that this song speaks strongly about what is going on in our country in our time. Scary how history tends to repeat itsself.
