Biblical Truth

I've been reading a bit lately (I read quite a lot, actually), and I've read a couple things that have really stuck with me. Here's a theological question for Sunday morning for you -- some people may have seen it before, but I just can't stop thinking about it:

Is something true because the Bible says it is (Christians believe on faith that the Bible is the inspired, authoritative word of God), or does the Bible say something is true because it IS true?

Or is there another answer?

1 I don't understand the question.

2 I think one of the "truths" that my mentor taught me regarding business may be applicable: Perception is Reality, the Truth is only the Truth. David

3 Mindflame, it's proposing two different options to explain the source of truth. Good answer, Smokey. David, sure, but the truth is also the truth.

4 Neither.... Truth is truth...God inspired the ideas behind the bible, but he used men to write them down, and he used men in the church to decide what books written were inspired by him... However, the truth is not the same as scientific history, or science...many stories are to teach us about how God acts, and how men should act.. For example, Jonah in the whale is about following God's command even though we think it might be dangerous, and about how repentance can bring God's mercy...

5 So, boinkie, you don't believe the Bible is truth. What, to you, is absolute truth (or is there such a thing)?

6 This is kinda like the old bumper sticker that my dad years ago revised: Original: God said it, I believe it, and that settles it. Dad's Version: God said it, that settles it, and I believe it.
