The response I expected, "We should raise taxes," came not 24 hours after the bridge collapsed. This cartoon is right-on.

Indeed. I did not hear one politician say, "Gee, maybe we spent too much on welfare and not enough on building roads." Instead, the IMMEDIATE reaction was, "See, we need to spend MORE of your money!"
