At the Mecklenburg County Commissioners meeting, the Republicans put forth a proposal. At it's heart, the proposal, introduced by Jim Puckett (R) and supported by the few Republicans on the board, requested that the county follow federal law. The Democrats (a majority) opposed obeying the law and voted down the proposal.
Now that might sound like hyperbole, but it is not. The resolution said specifically, and in it's entirety:
Direct County Manager to fully implement federal welfare reform law disqualifying illegal immigrants from certain taxpayer-funded benefits and to report on implementation efforts and results to date, if any. Direct County Attorney to identify and research the permissibility of policy reforms to enhance the enforcement of immigration law in Mecklenburg County and to deter illegal immigrants from taking up residence in Mecklenburg County, including particularly the prospect of requiring the Sheriff periodically to survey the Mecklenburg County jail population, charge all illegal alien jail inmates for their immigration law violations and remit them to federal immigration authorities for prosecution or deportation. [emphasis added]
So the Republicans asked the board to enforce the law.
I find it strange that the Republicans would have to pass a resolution to ask the county manager to enforce the law. Isn't that part of his job anyway? Can we fire him because he must be currently refusing to enforce the law? Apparently not as long as there is a Democrat majority on the county council.
Seriously, folks, the Democrats on the county council are now on the record as opposing enforcing the law. I think the federal government should stop giving the county money for welfare, since the county is refusing to follow the law for distributing the money!
Feel free to email or contact your representatives in Congress, no matter where you are from, and ask them to stop giving welfare money to Mecklenburg County, NC, because they are intentionally and obviously breaking the law in regards to it's distribution.
