I know indie music has been going against the grain as far as Digital Rights Management goes, but "Big Music" has always been opposed to free music. Now I have no problem with someone who creates something wanting to own it. I think that if a music company wants to protect copies of their property from being made, they should absolutely be able to.
Even if most people pay for their music, once legal copies are allowed, I can easily see many people posting on web sites copies of their music. And then how will artists get any money? Well, apart from record deals. And not including concerts. Or promotions. And not counting advertising deals. And music videos. I mean, these artists are going to start starving, aren't they?

They might as well not bother. There are several programs which will strip DRM right out in a matter of seconds.

DRM is useless, just as much as door locks are... they keep the honest people honest.
The artists usually dont make any money on Album sales, most modern artists are paid a flat fee that barely covers their cost of production... most of the money that artists make is from item sales at concerts and from small percentages of ticket sales...
