He gives them this money in an attempt to buy their votes. Statements by Easley's office make it unclear whether he is trying to buy the votes of teachers for himself, with aspirations towards a higher political office (US Senator?); for gubernatorial candidate Roy Cooper (200
, current state DA and candidate; or for Democrats in general.
What was clear is that this cash bribery attempt has nothing to do with teaching, education, or child learning. Easley says he wants to raise ALL teachers' salaries, currently at an average of over $60,000 per year, even if the individual teachers do nothing at work -- the important thing is to give them more money so they will continue to vote Democrat.
