Eat to Live, not Live to Eat

I was over at Evangelical Outpost reading about The Forgotten Vice of Gluttony. The first commenter there, Gordon Mullings, mentioned that short phrase that really makes you think.

Eating to Live, Rather than Living to Eat

Indeed.

Why do you eat? Do you eat because you can? Do you eat because it's "mealtime?" Or do you eat because you're hungry and need food to survive? I certainly do, at times, find myself eating just because I can. Why did I order that 22oz Porterhouse? Because I can.

More often, I don't, however. I know people who feel the need to eat at regular intervals -- not me. I almost never actually get hungry. I've gone as many as 3 days without eating, and still never got hungry (we were really lost in a BIG forest) -- even when we found our way out and to food, we weren't hungry, we just wanted to taste food.

Just think about it next time you're out for a bite. Do you really NEED to finish that super-sized portion? Are you eating just to eat, or are you eating to survive?

1 I'm the same way. I don't eat because I'm necessarily hungry, but because my wife is throwing food in front of me, and if I don't eat it, I'll never have the opportunity to eat again. Food is good, but I don't live to eat. To be honest, I live to drink beer.

2 Oh sure, you just HAD to bring beer into this, didn't you?

4 There is a time to feast and a time to fast. My problem is that time to graze.

5 Graze? Well, I guess that's what they make buffets for, right?

6 I have blood sugar issues and have to eat every couple hours. My problem is the poor choices I make when my blood sugar drops. If I take the time to prepare for it in advance, I'm cool. I don't eat much in general. I can't. I'm too short. 5 lbs on me makes me look HUGE.

7 I am so thankful I don't have that kind of issues. No way I could eat that often.
