Government Insurance

Wow. 33 different Christian Views Symposiums already? I'm impressed. I'm also embarrassed to note that I've only provided the correct answers to 14 of them. Well, I'm trying to be consistent and answer them each Wednesday.

The questions are provided each week by Lennie of Cross Blogging. Each week he provides a question and seeks answers from all people -- Christians and others. To join in, you just have to post your answer to the question on your blog, or even in his comments. This week is in response to a quote from John Stossell. You can read his entire quote over at Lennie's.

1. Should the government provide cheap insurance to anyone? Why or why not?
2. If you do not carry insurance on your property should the government pay for you to rebuild?
3. Should the government pay for local projects like rebuilding the levees in New Orleans?
4. What role if any should the military have in natural disasters?
Keep in mind, I strongly believe in people and not in government. There is little purpose for government, in my mind, and I agree with the profound limits placed upon government by the United States Constitution, even if that document is not being used today.

I don't believe in utopianism, just realism. I strongly support individual freedom and rights, including economic freedom. It's not that I think less of the poor or less fortunate, it's that it is a crime to take money from one group of people by force, only to give that money to another group that hasn't done a thing to earn it.

1. Should the government provide cheap insurance to anyone? Why or why not?

No. Where in any founding documents does it say that government is in the insurance industry? Government is not equipped to issue insurance to anyone at any time. It's completely and totally wrong for government to EVER provide insurance.

The free markets work. If you can't get insurance somewhere for something, either risk it you own damn self, or don't build it. It's morally wrong for you to build a house and expect ME to pay for it if something happens to it. Why is the concept of personal responsibility so foreign to so many people?

If you do not carry insurance on your property should the government pay for you to rebuild?

Again, absolutely not, with no exceptions. Government does not HAVE any money. The only way they can get money is to take it by force from someone else. That's WRONG. If you even take government money, you should be embarrassed because someone else worked to earn that money.
Should the government pay for local projects like rebuilding the levees in New Orleans?

Which government? The federal government (meaning me)? NO. There is no logical reason for people in Ohio to have a levee in New Orleans. However, if the people that live and pay taxes in New Orleans want to have a levee, I'm not going to stop them!
What role if any should the military have in natural disasters?

Very, very little. If used, it should only be when the local police forces cannot keep order -- and then they should only be used to keep order, not to seize weapons nor distribute food -- it's simply not their job.

So, as you can see, I'm not a big fan of government doing much of anything -- they shouldn't. Private individuals are MUCH better at doing nearly everything government currently does.

In fact, this mentality so prevalent in society today, to me, is the opposite of the American Spirit. Look how many people are sitting around doing NOTHING but complaining about what they're not getting. People are screaming and yelling because they're not being hand-fed and having their large bottoms wiped by government.

What ever happened to rugged individualism? If these were the sort of people around during Columbus' time, no one would have ever crossed the ocean. During the Westward Expansion, no one would have left their farms in New England and the south.

In fact, they likely wouldn't have even taken up farming without a government guarantee that they would be profitable!

This is a horrible condition into which Americans have fallen. Government is NOT the solution to anything. Government is the problem. Rely upon yourselves, NOT government. It is politically and morally WRONG to take money from someone else.

Remember that, next time you apply for or receive any check from government -- you took that money from me and my family. You took food directly out of my mouth -- because I worked for and earned that money, it was taken from me by force, and it was given to you. If you're not ashamed about it, there's something seriously wrong with you.

And Lennie? Thanks for asking!
