MT vs. WP

Wow.

I think I know now why I like Moveable Type over Wordpress. One word: documentation.

I have been searching for over an hour in the alleged documentation for Wordpress, including their "outdated" Wiki and their Codex. They really suck. Try searching for "comment" -- you get nothing. Seriously. If you try and find information about working with comments, it doesn't exist, according to their seach.

And if you manually start paging through the pages, you can finally find SOME information about comments. However, if you want something really, really simple -- like the number of comments on a post -- you cannot get it. Sure, you can DISPLAY it, but you cannot actually GET the number. That seriously stinks.

Using MT, this would (and did) take me a few seconds to find the information and use it. With WP, I still have not found how to do it, even after searching and attempting crap for over an hour. From what I can find in their manuals, the only way to actually get the number of comments is to actually loop through them and and count them yourself. Damn, that sucks.

But hey, if you know how to do it, please do let me in on the secret, because apparently the developers of Wordpress don't know.

1 I've had the most luck with searching the WordPress forums when I have something I need to know about. Although the search was better before they let Yahoo take it over...

2 Thanks for the tip. I'm having the most luck just searching the web overall than anywhere else, but I'll check out their forums, too.

3 I did most of my searching through either google or yahoo, typing in something like "wordpress pop up comments", which would often lead me to the wiki, forum, or docs. Some of the documentation for wordpress is great, some not so great. What ya looking to do?

4 Thanks for the tip, Teach. All I wanted was the simple number of comments on a post. I didn't want to display it, I wanted to work with it (assign it to a php variable).

5 You mean like where it shows for each post on the page how many comments there are? try ?php comments_popup_link(__('No comments yet'), __('Only one comment'), __('% comments')); ? put the <> in front and back, of course. Index page, as I'm sure you know.

6 I found that, thanks, but that actually displays the number on the page -- and I don't want that. I wanted to do different things based on the actual number of comments -- like if there was 1 comment, do something. That won't do that...I think I found how to do what I need, but I'm still working on it.

7 Before you invest too much on your blogware, try www.MilitaryWebcom.org/signup.php. It's free and the software is improved regularly for its bloggers. It's also the software of choice for VFW WebCOM. The VFW Departments (NC included) offer free blogs through their network too. www.vfwwebcom.org/signup.php.

8 Never heard of it, Tara Sue. I'll have to go check that out, thanks!
