NC Bans Cell Phones

Well, sort of. Only for certain people. At certain times. Under certain conditions. Sometimes.

The NC Senate passed Senate Bill 1289 to ban people under 18 from using a cell phone while driving. Some of you are cheering this move, I'm sure. But the devil, as usual, is in the details.

What punishement do these egregious violators face? No driver's license points, no insurance increases, not even court fees -- just a $25 fine. Sure, in most cases, who will pay that fine? The parents. Oh, but wait -- it gets better!

If the child is calling 911, that's okay. But it's also okay if the child was calling their parents. And let's see how that's going to work out:

Policeman pulls over the kid for talking on the phone. Kid hangs up to talk to policeman. "Son, who were you talking to?"

Kid: "My mom"

Policeman: "Oh, okay, sorry to bother you."

And the stupid, utterly useless, practically impossible to enforce bill still passed the Senate 38-8. Good job Senator(s): Albertson; Berger, P.; Brunstetter; East; Kerr; Nesbitt; Presnell; Stevens for voting against that crap.

1 That's like NJ. It is illegal to use one while driving without a headset, but the cops cannot pull you over if they see you doing it.

2 That one sure makes sense. Let's make something against the law but not let policemen actually enforce it. Where has the concept of freedom gone?

3 I don't care what party was behind that bill. Everyone who supported it should not get re-elected in the next election. They don't deserve it. If I was living in NC, they would have to seriously prove themselves to get elected again.

4 Unfortunately, the VAST majority of those who supported the bill have ZERO opposition in the general election -- in other words, they've ALREADY won re-election.

5 Once again I agree with you. The bill is worthless. As for the NJ bill mentioned, many states have seat belt laws that function that way. You have to wear them, but can only be given a ticket if you are pulled over for something else.

6 It's all about power and selective enforcement. If there's so many laws on the books that NO ONE can keep track of them all, police (and D.A.s) can enforce the ones they want (that generate revenue) and ignore the difficult ones (that cost money) at will.

7 "Let's make something against the law, but not let policemen actually enforce it." Ogre, you mean, you mean, um, you mean like immigration laws?

8 What immigration laws? There's laws about immigration? The Charlotte Police Department knows nothing about any such laws.
