Limit Spending By Adopting the Taxpayer Protection Act
Once again, feel free to weigh in either for or against this idea for North Carolina (even if you're not from North Carolina).
Spending is out-of-control in North Carolina. Last year spending increased by more than $1 billion, and the Legislature adopted a budget that projected a $600 million increase in tax collections based on economic growth. But that was not enough for the big spenders Â… they increased taxes by another $600 million. The Taxpayer Protection Act would limit the increase in government spending to population growth plus the rate of inflation. If the Taxpayer Protection Act had been in effect in 2005, there would have been no tax increases.
And those numbers don't include the extra huge piles of money to be raised by the lottery that will start tomorrow.
Yes, the North Carolina government spends WAY too much money. Why? Because they can. Why must they spend hundreds of millions on things like welfare for criminal aliens? Why should they support free education by spending millions on English as a second-language program? Whey are they spending millions raising oysters?
Everywhere a taxpayer protection act has been put in place, it works. The way it works is simple -- it forces the government to limit increases in spending according to the population and income growth. In other words, in North Carolina, where the population continues to expand, the government will STILL be able to spend more money -- just not quite as much as the Democrats would like.
72% of the people of North Carolina who were surveyed agree that North Carolina should have a taxpayer protection act. I'd love to see that survey question asked of the Democrats in the NC Legislature -- I'm betting it would be about 2%. Why? Because that's the Democrat ideal -- do not limit government in any way, shape, or form.
Will this pass? I don't think so. It has been introduced in the past, by Republicans, of course, and the Democrats have quickly squashed it. Conservatives want smaller government. This is one of the best ways to quickly stop massive, unrestrained, government growth. It SHOULD be passed.
