Their complaint, and reason for giving the higher education system a grade of "F," is that a college education is not affordable enough in North Carolina. Can someone explain how that's "nonpartisan?" They complain that despite the $144 MILLION given away by the state, that it's not enough. That's NOT nonpartisan. That's very clearly the liberal Democrat anti-freedom position. I suppose it might be considered "nonpartisan" because there's some Democrats registered as Republicans that support giving away that kind of cash, too.
Here's a news flash for you: government has utterly and completely failed at educating people. They are totally incapable of educating anyone at any time, any where. They can't educate at the grade school level, the high school level, or the college level. They're simply incompetent.
The value of a college education continues to fall as states continue to destroy them. States support socialists and others controlling the higher education system and continue to add classes that have no value and no meaning. Education is the one thing that no longer happens on college campuses, especially in state-supported institutions.
Want to improve education? Want to make a college degree worth something again? Get government OUT of education. Let individuals create an education system. Let PEOPLE work and earn money to pay for education. GIVING away more money from the state is stupid and only helps bureaucrats. If you want the numbers, I'll explain: Let's say it costs a nice, even $5,000 to actually pay for the so-called "education" of a student in a state-run school. The state, always looking to take money from it's citizens, will charge $6,000 to the students. Democrats (both registered Republican and Democrat) will then attempt to buy votes and tell people they will provide $4,000 for "those in need."
Of course, it wouldn't be fair to only pay for them, so they expand the program to provide a scale -- they'll pay $6,000 for those "in need," and $4,000 for everyone else (seriously, the state does this now).
Now that the actual cost to people ranges from $0 to $2,000, the people have more money and can actually afford college. Therefore, the institutions raise their tuition to $8,000 -- without any increase in actual costs. Students then actually have to pay some money to attend college, so they complain to the Democrats, who then raise the state supplement for students to $6,000.
Can you guess what happens next? That's right, the students then have money, so the college increases it's costs again, and the students can afford it. The endless cycle continues.
The net result? Colleges get HUGE piles of money from the state, which they took from the taxpayers, to "educate" students without any increased costs. What do the schools do with the money? Buy stuff. They need new buildings, new computers, and need to pay more to their staff -- so they raise their tuition because they know the state will just give them more money.
It's a horrible system, but is really, really easy to fix -- just stop the state giving away taxpayer money to the schools. If you really think that no one will be educated if that happens, you don't understand economics. If the state were to stop giving away hundreds of millions, the cost of college would go down. If the state were to stop funding higher education, the exact same percentage of people would get educated -- they'd just pay a lot less to get there.
