NC House Raises Taxes

The House voted along party lines, 63-54, with all Democrats supporting the tax increase. This tax increase is a half-cent increase in the sales tax for all people of North Carolina. The tax increase also increases the top rate on income tax to one of the highest in the country, raising it to 8.25 percent. Only California, Iowa, New Jersey, Oregon, and Vermont have higher income tax rates.

The tax increase passed also directly raises the sales tax on telephone service, satellite television service, and alcohol. As a side note -- no other state in the country has a higher sales tax rate. It would also start a completely new tax -- a tax on candy. At least you can teach your children young the dangers of taxes when they ask, "Why does the lady want 80 cents for my candy bar when the price tag says 75 cents?"

When you vote in North Carolina again, know that zero Republicans voted for this hundreds of millions of dollars tax increase, and all the Democrats did. Of course in the eyes of the formerly mainstream media (FMSM), that's not partisan.

1 And consider this with a state like NJ. They do not pay tax at all on essential items, like clothing and real food at the grocery store. We do. I tend to hold off on buying summer clothes till I visit my parents in NJ in early July every year. I buy winter stuff when I pop up to NJ for Christmas.

2 I know I must have looked like a total idiot last time I was in New Hampshire -- I bought a TV that was listed on the shelf as costing $99. When I got to the checkout counter, they actually asked for $99. I was so confused, I just stood there, not knowing what to do. Now I, too, do that often -- I know I'm making a trip there each summer, so I hold off on large purchases and make many of them while out of state. And you know what? If you don't report those purchases on your NC Income tax form (and pay the taxes on them), you're breaking the law. Seriously.

3 I wasn't going to mention that, since Uncle Mike might be watching I was totally ROTFLOL when I read the 2004 tax forms about that. Though the law states that if you did not pay tax for it then you need to cough up to NC DOR, they make it seem as if you are supposed to pay taxes to NC for ALL out of state and internet purchases. Takes careful reading, know a few folks who were freaked out, and I said, re-read it.
