Can you guess his solution to the problem?
A. Raise legislator pay to ensure he can afford the housing.
B. Create and build a new apartment building for housing of legislators.
C. Suggest rent-control on apartments near the capital buildings for legislators.
D. Find a cheaper way to live within his means.
Oh, want a hint? Mr. Thomas is a Republican.
Guess that made it easy, didn't it? If Mr. Thomas were a Democrat, any or all of options A-C would be considered "essential." But he's a Republican, so he only considered option D -- he's parked an RV near the capital and will stay in it while the house is in session. No, don't expect the Democrats to do the same with the state budget -- they're still considering how much more debt they can afford to put on the taxpayers.
Mr. Thomas also says the compensation of legislators doesn't justify the expense of renting or buying a house in Raleigh. This shows that Mr. Thomas is not only new, but in the minority. He hasn't discovered yet that top legislators in the House and Senate get upwards of $300,000 in direct compensation from lobbyists and tens of thousands more in personal checking account compensation direct from the taxpayer.
Join the Democrats -- it pays better, even if the money is ill-gotten.
