Ripken Baseball
Last night Ogre had the chance to visit Bill Ripken of Ripken Baseball. It was a 2-hour seminar on how to teach kids to play baseball, sponsored by The Charlotte Knights (opening day April 5th -- I'll be there) and Carolinas Baseball Center. It was great.

The clinic was held at the new facility for Carolinas Baseball Center on Westinghouse Road, just off I-77. It's a huge warehouse-style building with all sorts of indoor room for baseball practicing with cages, throwing areas, fielding areas, and just tons of room for practicing baseball.
Jeff Schaefer is the mastermind behind the facility, and he's put a lot of work into it. It's a great-looking place. I would absolutely be sending my team to practice there if it were not an hour's drive from my house. But if you're in the area and want to practice or learn about baseball, be sure and stop by.
Teaching the clinic was Bill Ripken. He knows what he's talking about. He gave all sorts of great tips and instructions on how to actually teach the kids about the game of baseball. He also mentioned that there's a LOT fewer kids playing baseball these days, and he's trying to help show how to teach them so that more will know how, have fun, and play the game. He also knows my personal childhood all-time baseball hero, Mr. Don Mattingly. No, he did not have a reasonable explanation for why he didn't ask Mr. Mattingly to be there with him. 
It was a great clinic and a great location. And it was free to attendees, thanks to the sponsors. If you've got a kid and want them to learn about baseball, be sure and check out the Ripken Baseball page -- they've got centers in Maryland and in Myrtle Beach, SC. And if you're looking for training of your (or someone else's) child in baseball in south Charlotte (or near there), be sure to check out Carolinas Baseball Center -- there's a bunch of former Major League Baseball players there ready to help you out.
