Solution to DUI? Spend Money!
The Charlotte Observer has the solution. In the past 6 months in and around Charlotte, 7 people have died in car crashes involving drunk drivers. The Observer claims that all we have to do is spend money and no one will ever die the victim of a drunk driver again.
So, in other words, Mecklenburg has the absolute BEST courts in the country -- and they're having no effect. So they should be expanded. And given more money. This is straight out of the liberal handbook -- if a program doesn't work, give it more money. If it still doesn't work, give it more.
In other words, we've got too much freedom goin' on. Spend more money and restrict freedom more, and no one will die. Perhaps the Observer would only be happy if everyone were stopped every night at a "sobriety checkpoint." Goodness knows, there's nothing else for police to do in Charlotte -- after all there weren't 7 murders, 26 rapes, 238 robberies, over 1,000 burglaries and over 2,000 larcenies just in the month of January in Charlotte...oh wait -- yes there were.
So the Observer freely admits that they are calling for more socialism and are simply using drunk drivers and emotion to scare people into supporting their socialist and communist ideas.

How, you ask? Well, the Observer whines and complains that there were proposals to strengthen drunk driving laws in the legislature that didn't get passed. If only those laws were in place, no one would die.
Politicians must also get serious about treatment programs. Mecklenburg's successful drug treatment courts are a model for the nation. They should be expanded and better funded.

"The beatings will continue until morale improves" comes to mind here.
Bigger fines, more sobriety checkpoints and more public focus on cracking down on drunk drivers are also badly needed. All these require political will and resources

But the Observer knows that it's call for more government spending, more taxes, and less freedom, won't have any effect on drunk drivers:
Still, most drivers in a recent survey said the biggest discouragement against drunk driving is realizing they could kill others and themselves.
So the Observer freely admits that they are calling for more socialism and are simply using drunk drivers and emotion to scare people into supporting their socialist and communist ideas.
