Now I'm not one to rain on someone's parade, but good luck, Mr. Jones. North Carolina House District 5 was drawn to be a Democrat seat, and it will always be a Democrat seat.
Going back as far as 1996, no one has made a challenge to the Democrats in that seat. Sure, in 2004, a Libertarian candidate (which have since been outlawed) got a couple votes -- less than 1% -- but other than that, no one has even presented even token opposition in the general election.
The latest figures from the North Carolina Board of elections shows the district to be 75% registered Democrat and 13% Democrats who won't admit they're Democrats ("unaffiliated"). So Jones will have to overcome 88% of the people who are going to vote against him because he doesn't have a "D" after his name.
I'm not saying it can't be done -- there's just over 43,000 registered voters in that district. With this year's turnout likely to be very low (no "big-ticket" elections), there might be 10% of eligible voters who vote (damn lazy bastards). So 4,300 may vote. Jones only needs about 2,151 votes to win.
He could do it -- if he starts walking and asking for votes now. If you're near him (Greenville, NC), please do take a look. He supports a taxpayer's bill of rights -- like about 80% of the population of North Carolina.
