Sue Myrick, esteemed House representative for North Carolina's 9th district for a good number of years, had a press release regarding an amendment she added to the bill that would deport criminal aliens who are convicted of DUI. The initial bill didn't deport them until they had THREE DUIs:
My amendment will also give specially trained State and local law enforcement officers the authority to detain drunk driving illegal aliens so they canÂ’t run from their court dates and be free to drink and drive again- as is currently the case. The amendment also allows these same officers to transport illegal aliens into federal custody so they can be deported, and they will be reimbursed by the Department of Homeland Security for doing so.
Information on the illegal alien drunk drivers will be reported to the Department of Homeland Security, the National Criminal Information Center and the Drivers License Agreement of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.
The authorities and information collection will give us another tool to use against criminal illegal aliens who continue to break our laws and threaten our safety.
By passing this amendment today, we will be sending a strong message that we will no longer tolerate criminal illegal aliens.
You drink. You drive. YouÂ’re illegal. YouÂ’re deported. Period.
I'm confused.
Now I do appreciate this effort. Ms. Myrick is in a very safe Republican seat, but this will certainly shore up her support from all corners. There were rumors that she was considering running for governor of NC, and things like this action would make that easier. But I'm confused.
I thought it was already illegal to be in this country illegally. Aren't there already laws that prohibit entry into this country? If there are, then why is this law needed? Can't we already deport criminal aliens? Oh, I'm fully aware that we're NOT doing it, I just thought we already could.
I also applaud her efforts to encourage local police to transport and detain criminal aliens, but I'm just not sure this law isn't just a duplication of what's already there, with that exception...
