These people are complete and total a-holes. I'm sorry about the language, as I try and keep it clean here, but these people are horrible scum. If I were there and I held out water to someone who hadn't had a drink in 3 days and they said, "about time," I'd yank that damn water back and pour it on the ground.
This is what the "entitlement mentality" breeds. Sorry excuses for humans not just waiting for assistance, but demanding it. Hey scum of the earth in New Orleans: I OWE YOU NOTHING. NOTHING, DAMMIT.
I had been wondering for days why reports kept coming in about people in places "waiting for help." It confused me because if it were me, I wouldn't sit there waiting. I don't care if I had nothing, sitting still waiting wouldn't get me anything. I'd leave, if nothing else, and go find a public water fountain in Florida.
But no, these people sat and waited, because they had become so dependent on government that they were demanding someone come take care of them. ASSHOLES. One woman had the nerve to complain that her FREE meal wasn't heated!
I very seriously am considering changing all my plans for helping these ^^@#$$! people.

I know what you mean. Get the feeling that some of these people have spent their
whole lives waiting for others to do things for them, and complaining about how those things were done?
On the other hand, cut'em a little slack. Many of them are just regular people trapped in a bad situation (hint: There are men with guns forcing many of them to stay put) and probably not thinking too clearly after seeing their lives/livelihoods/everything they've worked for swept away. Tends to produce a certain irritibaility or even temporary insanity, I imagine.

I have not posted this on my blog, but notice I have not declared on my blog where my money is going. All of my money is going to the La and Mississippi refugees in Pensacola who are thankful for what they have and to Mississippi. ALL OF IT and I am giving a substantial amount. None of my money is going to New Orleans. Let everyone else take care of them. Not me. Not one damn dime.

That's true, YOU don't owe them anything, and donating to a charity is completely voluntary. However, the government of the United States of America is obligated to take care of its citizens, just as Saddam's regime was obligated to take care of Iraquis and failed, and Kim Jong-il's regime is obligated to take care of North Koreans and is failing. Those are more extreme (country-wide) cases than what's going on in the hurricane Katrina disaster area, but the principle of providing for the populace is the same.

Sissy yes -- I've started not even watching the news because they're highlighting these idiots and I don't even want to see them.
Zandperl, that's has become the basic argument between conservatives and liberals (Demo and Repubs) today. The government IS me. And no, the way the United States Constitution was written, they not only are NOT obligated to provide food, water, and shelter, they CANNOT.
Those who believe in freedom, capitalism, and a constitutional republic would very strongly argue against that -- the government DOES NOT provide for the populace.

I agree, a government isn't obliged to provide basics for its people. However, it's even worse when a government taxes the populace, saying the money will be there for certain basics, and then when the time comes doesn't fulfil those promises.
I don't know that's what happened here, by the way. And my preference would be to reduce taxes and benefits.
But that's all why I'm not donating money to any group, I'm waiting to see what a friend's brother, who lived in New Orleans, is going to need.

Don't tell me you "can't" leave NO, while sitting on your porch with beer in a party atmosphere talking about "storm party" and "we ain't leavin', this is my HOME!" - then bitch that you lost everything, and are stuck in NO with nothing.
PLUS, this should not have been a surprise - it actually was predicted to be WORSE. The storm was predicted, the damage was predicted, they were warned... they were told to get out, those who couldn't were sent to 10 different shelters and told to bring "blankets and food to last for several days" and that it would not be a "pleasant" situation.
I'm sympathetic to those who left and will come home to nothing, I'm not feeling very sympathetic for most of the ingrates still there.

I am most amazed by how ungrateful some of the people are. Why can't they say "Thank You" when given something? Are they that far disconnected from reality to actually believe that they are SO not responsible for ANYTHING? Do they really believe they are OWED food and water simply because they exist? Unfortunately, I think they do, and that is an incredibly sad state of existence.
