Once again, I had the honor of meeting a number of additional conservatives, everyday people like yourselves, that are interested in conservative positions. With me were Tom and Lindalyn Kakadelis, John and Wanda Conway (John is running for election to the NC House -- I'm still working on links), Laney Funderbunk, and two college Republican volunteers who were helping out this weekend, Chad Hilton and Randy Costa. Thank you all for the excellent company and conversation during breakfast.
Before the speaker began, we had a nice, lively discussion with Lindalyn Kakadelis regarding education. She explained that the way to win the battle was to develop relationships and encourage unity based on ideas, not party loyalty. I'm pretty sure this is the same idea that Jason Lewis promotes on his radio show each afternoon when he talks about being a Conservative first and a Republican second.
Virginia Foxx was mildly disappointed to be speaking after Congressman hayworth -- and indeed he was a tough act to follow. But she repeatedly said that she agreed with him and his position on immigration. He very strongly agrees that the primary purpose of government is to protect it's citizens and everything else comes second.
She believes that the vast majority of voters simply have conservative values. That just doesn't translate into votes because of party unity and party loyalty. One of the big challenges of this decade will be converting those values into votes for conservative candidates.
Congresswoman Foxx was one of only 11 people in Congress to vote against massive piles of cash for alleged "Katrina aid." She explained that she was rather proud of that vote because she said that there was no accountability. A very precious quote of hers:
If I have to compromise my principles to be in an elected office, then I don't need to be here.
If only there were many, many more that had that philosophy.
The story that brought the most laughter from the crowd was when she told a story about her mother. Her mother had told her that sometimes people don't have a spine. When that happens, you often need to get a broomstick, stick it up their BACK, and provide them with a spine.
Do you know any legislators that are in need of a broomstick?
