Weekend News Briefs

I saw a lot of interesting news this weekend. I don't have a lot to say about any one of these, but here's a few comments on a few of the events:

1. Turkish Airliner Hijacking Ends in Surrender. This one didn't make much news, did it? Two men hijacked a plane. The two hijackers were "protesting against the United States." So who did this? It's not racial profiling to report the words of the hijackers, is it? "We are Muslims."

2. A lot of noise was made about the Arkansas Law that's a "mistake." What's the horrible mistake? That the legislature accidentally gave away a little bit of freedom. Don't worry, the legislators are scrambling around, working hard to grab back that tiny bit of freedom they let escape. You see, they allowed parents to supervise their children. Again, don't worry, they WILL take that freedom back as soon as they possibly can. Can't have people being free, can we? No, they don't give any reason for not allowing the freedom.

3. New evidence that marijuana has good effects. I'm rather surprised this one slipped through the censors editors. It just won't do for people to think that there's actually some good uses for any substance that the government has deemed to be evil.

4. Call me callus, but from the details that have been released, I'm not sure why this guy has to go to jail. I think he just needs to get a good jury (that has the guts to obey the law and not the judge) and he'll go free. After all, if you had a 17-year old daughter and found a 19-year old boy in her room, what would you do? Perhaps there's more details, but on it's face this looks like a crime of passion type thing.

1 So Arkansas would rather have people marrying their cousins than getting parental permission to marry a 15 year old? And what parent in their right mind would ever grant a pedophile permission to marry their child? It's amazing, as you said, that freedom was an accident here. A man accused of shooting and paralyzing his daughter's boyfriend has been charged with first-degree battery and a terroristic act. How is firing a gun in your on home EVER a terrorist act? This is absolutely appalling!

2 Yes, Arkansas is primarily concerned because they actually changed a law to allow parents to give permission. That's the only reason they don't like this law. They're VERY upset that they let a little freedom out of the bag! And while it is truly sad that this boy was shot, based only upon the details presented so far, I'm just not seeing such a severe crime. Since the girl was underage, maybe the boy should be prosecuted for statutory rape.

3 Ummm, Ogre, As a Dad, I would have beaten him severely. But the problem is that the dad left to go get a weapon. This takes it out of being a crime of passion or defense of his daughter's virtue and places it into a premeditated state. NC does not consider a 17 year old and a 19 year old as statutory rape either. 16 is the age of consent and the two year rule would also apply. I do think the boy was as dumb as could be, doing it in her father's house. But Daddy has a very serious problem here. Not sure how I would vote on a jury, since there is surely a lot more evidence to come. But this is one I don't start off in agreement with you on. (A rarity!)

4 I'm not saying what the Dad did was right, just that it's more passion-related than a pre-meditated state. Again, the details are light, but it sounds like "leaving to get a gun" was running into the other room. I hardly consider that premeditation. On the other hand, if the guy got in his car, drove 30 minutes, picked up a gun, ran by the ammo store, then drove home and THEN shot him, he'd have time to "cool off." A few seconds of running into the next room, in my opinion, is still far from premeditated. And yes, I know officially it's not statutory rape, but if what the man did was "premeditated terroristic act," then the boy should be charged with statutory rape, kidnapping, trespassing, and various other related charges. This is just another example of the government system of laws completely and totally out of control -- and therefore utterly useless and arbitrary.
